The Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences promotes the highest standards in education, research and practice of oral and maxillofacial pathology. Our faculty teach courses in general pathology, oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral and maxillofacial radiology to dental and dental hygiene students as well as postgraduate residents in the VCU School of Dentistry. The department also oversees the radiology operation of the school.
The department's board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologists specialize in the microscopic and clinical diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the oral and maxillofacial regions. Through the department's biopsy service, our oral pathologists examine and diagnose oral biopsy specimens submitted by private practitioners.
The department offers clinical consultative services to private practitioners by telephone, email or patient referral as well as the consultation and interpretation of radiographs.
Our faculty members are frequent journal authors and lecturers at continuing education programs. Our faculty also practice forensic dentistry when specialized evaluation of teeth, bone and soft tissue is needed.
